Barfi! - Movie Review

If I am asked to describe Anurag Basu’s ‘Barfi’ in a single word ‘Masterpiece’. Storyline - life is about finding happiness in small things rather than in being wasted in lusty pursuits. The acting of Ranbir Kapoor and Priyanka Chopra leaves the audience speechless. Cinematographer Ravi Varman captures the lovely North Bengal in a splendid way and each frame looks like a beautiful painting.

The movie narrates the story of the character Barfi who has a speech and hearing impairment who lives with his ageing father in Darjeeling of 1970s. Barfi is innocent and simple hearted guy who is more appealing for his cute Chaplin-meets-Mr. Bean acts. Shruti, a typical rich girl who visits Darjeeling loses her heart to him despite the fact that she is engaged to a wealthy man back in Kolkata. After a short romance, she leaves Barfi heartbroken to marry the moneyed man as she chooses money over true love. There comes an autistic Jhilmil Chatterjee belongs to an affluent family in Darjeeling where her sensitive needs were barely cared by her family. Meanwhile Barfi’s father is battling kidney failure and Barfi looks for all ways to get the money for his father’s treatment but in vain. So he decided to kidnap Jhilmil for money with the help of his friend. As story moves on Barfi and Jhilmil realize that they are made for each other to share their lives. On the other hand, , Shruti feels that even after 6 years of marriage still she has strong feelings for Barfi.

Ranbir Kapoor delivers an award-winning performance through the character ‘Barfi’. No doubt Priyanka Chopra who played the role of Jhilmil Chatterjee would be the award winning woman and bollywood newbie South Indian actress Illeana D’Cruz sticks to her character and adds beauty to the magical tale of Barfi. The story moves back and forth from 1978, 1972 and 2012 in an easy-to-follow fashion and the film’s songs are simply touching.

Overall ‘Barfi’ is a classical sculpture and a sweet treat to audience with perfection in casting, acting, comedy, romance, emotions, story, screenplay, cinematography etc. Kudos to the director for his romantic comedy movie with an unforgettable character ‘Barfi’.
